's election day. and the polls here in california just opened about 55 second ago. the months of campaigning the millions of dollars spent on ads comes down to this day. the presidential race remains a dead heat with the latest poll showing president obama and mitt romney still neck in neck in the all important battleground states. mitt romney voted this morning near his boston area home with his wife. romney is now heading to ohio and then pennsylvania where he is making last-minute campaign appearances. this was just announced yesterday before heading back to boston this evening. president obama is back home in chicago where he will watch the results come in later this evening. coming up at 7:15, we will have a guide to the key returns today and when we could know the results of the presidential election. >> time 7:01 you heard tori the polls opened moments ago here in california. we have reporters all over the bay area covering today's local, state and national issues. you see the reporters there tara and everybody else we will start with ktvu's at polling place in san jose good morning.

the passing of the proposition in california. schools will receive $14 billion more over the next four years than they would have if the measure had failed. high-earning californians may have to recalculate their budgets. under prop 30, people making more than $250,000 a year will pay up to 3% more in income taxes than in previous years. that's retroactive. and the sales tax is going up .25. >>> in a short while, some people will get extra help for the holidays. janine de la vega live in san jose where about 100 people camped out overnight in the rain and the cold. so janine, what are they waiting for? >> reporter: they are waiting for a holiday giveaway. it's cold out here. it's in the mid-40s. for these people waiting here, it's been a rough night. despite that they have camped out. they've had tarps and tents. some of them umbrellas. they are huddled up with blankets. a short while ago, volunteers started handing out coffee to warm some of these people up. they are all waiting to register for this holiday giveaway here at the sacred heart community. more than 250 people are waiting in li

at the two storms. this first one will continue to go across the californias, we move through the afternoon. we are going to see a bit of a break, maybe a bit of sun and then for the second half this system will start to pull in. let me show you what i'm talking about. scattered shower this morning. expect the slick roads, by noontime we have mainly cloud conditions but we are mainly dry. we have the break, we have rain and snow at the sierra but the elevation very high with the snow above 7,000 feet. by sunset, 5:00 we have the rain pulling in once again. this is the second system moving in to the north bay. if you have evening plans it's going to be wet. over the central bay by 7:00 and in to the south bay by 10. in the overnight it starts to push out. tomorrow morning, sunday 8:00. mainly dry and sunday will be cooler than today but we will be again mainly dry for sunday. the winds right now 14 miles an hour in oakland. 16 in san jose. temperatures, mild. relatively speaking. we are have upper 50s, low 60s outside outside the door right now. 60 degrees for mountain view. 57 santa rose
